BERLIN FINDS: Onkel Zozo Art Gallery

October 31, 2013

Happy Halloween! I thought a post on cute little monsters would be perfect for today! I found this super cute Art Gallery after attending the Alternative Berlin Walking Tour with some visiting Filipino friends. Berlin is a city of art and artists of all kinds.  The scene for creative people here is so wonderful and you can feel it just walking the streets, especially in Kreuzberg where there are so many beautiful Grafitti – some so amazing that I wouldn’t mind having em on my wall. It seemed only perfect to find this art gallery of adorable monsters, just behind the famous Astronaut graffiti of Victor Ash.

The store is small but has tons of character. I was expecting some really edgy and angsty art, but what do we see? The cutest monsters. I am not usually into this style, but there is something about the illustrations that’s so lovable and heartwarming. I was oohing and ahhhing in no time! I would love to get a print (A4 prints are 8 €) since I don’t think I can afford the originals (the ones I like are 270 €) for a future kids room (we plan to have kids y’know?). I have to choose a kid friendly design like this untitled piece by Matteo Dineen because some are definitely for adults (i.e.. too gruesome for kids haha)

  1. Building a Rocket
  2. When One Plus One is Three
  3. And So It Goes
  4. The Out of Body Experience

They also have a book of their artwork entitled Make Believe! And it’s in English. Very cool!Make-Believe-Softcover-Promo-Pic-02

The store is co-owned by artists American Mateo Deneen and Dutch Johan Potma, who have been business partners for more than 8 years. They started in the flea markets of Berlin and quickly gained a following. Their works are made on old items like cigar boxes or wooden lids and they believe that these old items add to the story of the art that they are creating.

I definitely need to go back and explore their store some more! They have several stores/galleries in Berlin.

What do you think of their monsters? Lovable or scary? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
