BERLIN BITES: Arirang Korean BBQ

August 8, 2014

I love Korean BBQ and I’ve been craving for it since we left Jakarta. We first discovered the joys of Korean food, especially BBQ in Jakarta where there is quite a Korean population. Our Apartment in Jakarta was had many Korean establishments near by and this was our favourite place to go.   Here in Berlin we have a go-to place for super spicy Korean Bulgogi but they don’t serve it Korean BBQ-style on your table. Now we finally found a place for affordable and delicious Korean BBQ at Arirang. It was recommended to us by some colleagues at the Philippine Embassy and is conveniently located near Ku’damm.

Once you order the typical side dishes that come with Korean meals will be served. These small plates and piping hot white rice are complimentary with the meal and if you would like to top-them up, just ask the wait staff and they will happily do it for you.

This portion of beef bulgogi is supposedly for 2 people, but to be quite honest it is good for 4 Asians if you are sharing other dishes family style. Not bad for € 20. arirang korean berlin

Another delicious recommendation is their chicken ketchup.

The staff will set it up and mix up the meat for grilling, then once in a while you should mix it up and separate the pieces. Our waitstaff did not mention this to us and one side of our Bulgogi got slightly burnt, but it made it taste even better. Once you are satisfied with how it looks turn the stove down just to keep the food warm. arirang korean berlin-002

A friend ordered bulgogi and it’s a generous portion for one person. I might try this next time. arirang korean berlin-003

Another dish I would like to order next time is the grilled pork belly (one portion is for 2 people) which comes with the lettuce, various sauces and more side dishes. I love placing the grilled pork on the lettuce with the various items from the small plates and dipping them in delicious sauces before each bite. It can get a bit messy but I don’t mind eating with my hands.

The restaurant is quite big, closes late at 11pm and has no-frills (i.e. ambiance) but I have a feeling we will be coming back quite often because the delicious food and great value for money.  All in all we spent € 55 and the four of us could barely finish the food despite our huge appetites. Service was fast, but we were there quite late at around 21:00 because we were joining our Muslim friends for their buka puasa (breaking of their fasting) during Ramadan.
