BERLIN BITES: Cupcake Berlin

October 18, 2013

Berlin’s First Cupcake Shop

I was really excited to find great reviews for this cupcake shop near the Boxhagener Platz Flea Market. I love cupcakes (that’s why I learned to make them so I can make the yummy ones I love!) and I am always looking for good cupcake shops. So I told TD we have to drop by for dessert after Sunday Brunch and Flea Market shopping.

I love the interiors of the store! It’s so pretty and felt like I was in cupcake wonderland – I mean look at those beauties! They looks so scrumptious.

I love that there are options for people with special diets, i.e. Gluten-free / Vegan (lactose free) Cupcakes.5-Berlin Cupcakes Shop-004 I love the outdoor seating too. They were able to spill out the whimsical look outside with their colorful table decor and all white table. 6-Berlin Cupcakes Shop-005 I got the salted caramel cupcake and the Hot Chocolate cupcake with chocolate buttercream frosting.

The verdict? Though the cupcakes and the interiors of Cupcake Berlin look incredible, I was quite disappointed with the cupcake themselves. The cake itself was and the icing, though sweet, lacked the chocolate buttercream flavor I was looking for. Did we just order the wrong thing? I don’t know.

I like my cupcakes moist and flavourful, I don’t mind if it’s not as pretty. So for the price, I don’t think I will be back to check out the other flavors. I will probably just bake my Tiramisu cupcakes to get my cupcake fix! It’s too bad though coz if it had been delicious, I would have liked to take a break from baking and indulge in someone else’s baking once in a while haha!

Another negative was that they only have staff toilets so if you need to pee after having a coffee, you’ll have to go to another resto or find a public toilet. Not cool.

So if you are vegan/allergic to gluten, and you need a sugar fix, you might still be interested in checking it out. Maybe I just came on an off day, ordered the wrong flavour or just have unbelievably high cupcake standards haha! I’d love to hear from other people who have eaten in Cupcake Berlin before!

What a cute store! It seems that cupcakes have gained a lot of popularity all over the world these days. We find cupcakes in India a lot, too!

Hi Kaho, this is the only cupcake place I’ve found in Berlin. Cupcakes aren’t popular here at all. So I am just baking them myself if we are craving for some hehe. The store is super cute indeed!

Wow, so finding one must have been a nice find! We made carrot cake cupcakes over the weekend. It’s one of my favorites!

Unfortunately Kaho, the cupcakes were a bit dry so for the price, I will just make my own. =p I understand though because it’s hard to keep cupcakes moist. I think the store is still so cute anyway so I wanted to post pics. And it’s great that there are vegan options for cupcake lovers here. =)

What kind of cupcakes did you make?

It may have been because you got chocolate cupcakes. Every store-bought chocolate cupcake I’ve ever gotten has been dry and tasteless, even when other flavors at the same bakery are good. I generally have good results with vanilla and lemon flavors. If you try that bakery again those flavors might be better. I’ve been enjoying your blog, btw. 🙂

Dear Rachel, that is interesting. I’ve never thought about it that way. I recently tried other flavors from Cupcake Berlin, and this time the chocolate and red velvet cupcake were delicoius and moist but the icing was too sweet. I noticed that other people eating the cupcakes were scraping off the icing from their own cupcakes, just like I was doing.

So far the chocolate and vanilla cupcake from this shop has been my favorite cupcake find in Berlin. I will venture into the vanilla and lemon flavors next time I am in a cupcake shop. Thanks for the tip! And thanks so much for the lovely compliment!
