I want to share another recent discovery care of a Singaporean friend living in Jakarta. She shared with me this writeup about Markthalle Neun (or Markethall Nine) This is a photoblog of our visit to the weekend food market, which is one of my favourite places to visit on weekends.
Sironi Bread
Sironi has been proclaimed by some to have the best white bread in Berlin. Definitely worth checking out. Personally I don’t like their pizzas but I see a long line for their white bread.
The variety of artisanal food products is amazing. I was overwhelmed! There are even options for vegans. A lot of the produce is organic. There are table scattered around with fresh flowers. The casual vibe and bright happy atmosphere is amazing.
Tapas Y Bebidas La Cazuela
Street Food Thursday: Thu 17.00 – 22.00 • Weekend Market: Fr – Sat 10 – 18h

Tapas La Cazuela first caught TD’s eye. He is half Spanish and we are always looking for good places to eat Spanish food.
The place is run by Rosa, who was so lovely to chat with, while she prepared the food.
Browse around her shop for some Spanish products like olives and sardines.
We ordered lentil soup, chorizo a la plancha and San Miguel Cerveza (No this is not related to the Filipino San Miguel Beer company). TD loves lentils and he was happy with this vegetarian version. I loved the spicy kick of the chorizo sandwich. I enjoyed the ice cold cerveza immensely. We paid €11 including drinks.

For round two, we were intrigued by the barbecued meat options in Big Stuff Smoked BBQ. it was fun to watch their team prepare the different orders. They were a friendly and jolly bunch.
We ordered the pulled pork sandwich and roasted potatoes. For both we ordered the medium spicy sweet sauce. I loved the combination of the arugula and apples with the BBQ sauce and the lean pork. Perfectly juicy and tasty! We will definitely be back to try the beef brisket. The potatoes went well with the cucumber pickle – salty and tangy. We paid €8 for 1 sandwich with sides.
Frau Zeller Torten Manufaktur

There was still so much to eat and we were stuffed already. Time for dessert at Frau Zeller’s inhaberlin, Annette M. Zeller, sells cakes slices, whole cakes and pastries. For TD’s birthday I did a special trip to Markthalle Neun to buy our favourite Lemon Cloud Cake.
We ordered the best seller, Zitronen Wolkentorte or Lemon Cloud Cake €3. Normally TD doesn’t like tart and tangy cakes but this was absolute heaven. The first bite is a bit tangy but when you get used to it then you can taste all the different flavors melding – the sweet meringue, tangy lemon cream, sweet coconut (?) and the toasted nuts. #foodgasm We at this with cappuccinos from the center of the market hall (€1.80/cup). It was the perfect end to a wonderful food trip!
We were looking for (and this is a mouthful) my friend’s friend’s cousin tom’s stall, called BAO Kitchen. They serve Taiwanese Burger or Gua Baos. But I guess their stall is only there on Street Food Thursdays. So we’ve gone a couple of Thursdays to Markthalle9 specifically to have those delectable buns – LOL!
Everything we tried in in Markethall 9 was excellent. I can’t wait to come back and taste what the other stalls have to offer.
100 pct Olive Products
There are many other artisanal products that are available in the market. I found Reza, proprietor of 100 pct. He sells beautiful big bottles of 100 pct. virgin olive oil. He explained to me the different olive-related products he sold. This is what I love about going to the many markets in Berlin. It’s an entirely different shopping experience from going to a mall. We get to meet to the owners who talk so passionately and know their products inside and out. There is nothing quite like the experience and intimacy of getting to know your produce vendors.
