One of my sources of great joy here in Berlin is being able to buy flowers and plants. They are beautiful, cheap and abundant. Every street seems to have a flower shop. We can buy flowers for as cheap as €1-2 and a beautiful big bouquet can be purchased for €8. Potted flowers for as cheap as €1.25/pot.
In Jakarta TD found it a bit expensive in the places we knew to buy, so he didn’t like me buying flowers at all. Expats tend to be overcharged in Jakarta and the flower stores didn’t really have prices on display. The only times we ever bought flowers, it was in potted plants so they last longer. However I had difficulty keeping them alive because of the intense afternoon sun that faced our apartment. Many of them died despite my best efforts so I gave up and learned to buy beautiful fake ones.
My birthday bouquet from TD. The big white flower is currently my favorite. I have no idea what they are called though.
Here are a few of the Instagram photos I’ve taken of different flowers, herbs and potted plants we’ve gotten here in Berlin.

There are flower shops everywhere, but we still like to look for the best prices so we usually get our flowers and plants from:
- IKEA – beautiful and cheap flowers €2, orchids €4, carnivorous plants €4, leafy plants and pots!
- Winterfeldtplatz Farmers Market – 3 or 4 small potted plants for only €5, great selection of herbs too
- Blütenreich U- Bhf Adenauerplatz – Where I buy weekly, it’s the best priced flower shop in the underground station
- Lidl Supermarket – potted herbs like basil and parsley for only €1.49
For the white balcony pots with trays, they can be purchased at BAUHAUS.
Where do you buy your flowers in Berlin and why? I would love to here where other Berliners like to shop!
*Prices in this post are to the best of my recollection. They may change without notice. Kindly check the original source for updated information.
It’s always nice to have greens in home. I am a plant killer, so I prefer fake ones, but I do love live ones when I have them. Your post made me think that I should have some in our apartment. I love IKEA plants!
haha! I have always been a plant killer in Asia. My cousin calls me the black thumb and when he saw my plant photos on Instagram he said, and I quote “If only your zombie cactus could see you know” Haha because I had cacti before, and I somehow managed to kill all of them LOL! I am happy to be in a place that is cool coz I am having fun actually tending to plants and happy that so far only a few have died (the ones who cannot take the cold fall weather have given up on life). I hope to see photos of plants in your place soon! Are live plants affordable in India?
I had thought the flower stand prices here in Jakarta were reasonable, but maybe I’m comparing them to US prices. The large white one in your bouquet looks like a hydrangea inflorescence perhaps? That’s terrific that you can grow plants there. I like the tropical plants here, but I do miss my garden of mediterranean herbs and flowers. happy gardening!
