BERLIN TO DO: Berlin Palace Humbolt Box

March 15, 2014

For many people the oddly shaped, very modern Humboltbox offends their sense of sight because it is like a sore thumb sticking out in the middle of the very beautiful old buildings in Museum Insel. I am happy to find out during our visit of the Berlin Palace Information Center, that is only a temporary structure which contains beautiful things within and has a very good purpose  for being there.

A model of turn-of the-century Berlin landscape shows you where the Berlin Palace was before it was destroyed by the Nazis. It took the late Horst Dühring 15 years to build this perfect and exact model.

One look makes it immediately apparent that although the Palace was not everything, without the Palace the rest is nothing.

How the new Berlin Palace will look and why the design and architect has been chosen is interesting to hear.

Life sized moulds of the details are explained and if you want  to be part of this historical building you can sponsor a part of the building or give a small voluntary donation.

On the higher levels are exhibitions of

  • Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation’s National Museums in Berlin
  • Central and Regional Library
  • Humboldt University

which are so interesting to see. There is also an amazing view of Lustgarten.

After going around, make sure to go up to the beautifully designed restaurant which has 2 viewing terraces on the top floor.

GOOD TO KNOW: For your convenience in many museums in Berlin you can leave your jackets in lockers which are free to use. You will temporarily insert a 1 or 2 Euro coin to enable the lock and remove the key. Once you are done with your tour and meal, you can open the locker and get your doing back.

This information centre has been raising awareness of the great cultural project since 30 June 2011. Friendly volunteers  are available there every day, usually between 9:30AM to at least 4:00PM with expert information.

Special tours of the center can be arranged by telephone at 030 2067 3093.
