I know, I know these aren’t really considered gadgets, but let’s just say that I’m using the term “GADGETS” on my blog to loosely refer to gadgets, gizmos and tools. =)
I’ve been wondering how to mark the drill holes for my beautiful new set of Mirrors that I bought a couple of months back. I got 2 sets (7 pieces each) with 2 holes to drill for each mirror. Total of 28 holes or 14 pairs which need to be perfectly vertically aligned. Crap. I tried figuring it out with the tape measure but because of it’s flexibility, I can’t tell if the 2 holes are perfectly straight!
Then one day I came to Aksara Gift Shop/Bookstore and found this carpenter’s folding ruler by Kikkerland. Perfect! It is 2 meters / 200 cm /79 inches long but fold to a compact 10 inches so it’s easy to store!
Before embarking on marking the 28 drill holes on top of the buffet table, I practiced first by marking drill holes for my new invisible bookshelves. It was easy enough and the best thing about it is it’s easy to use with a level (another must have DIY DIPLOWIFE GADGET!) because the level sticks to it magnetically which makes it easier to tell if the pair of markings are perfectly vertical or horizontal! I can’t really do this with my trusty measuring tape below.
This doesn’t mean that it will replace my beloved measuring tape because most of the time I will still be needing this even more compact tool! Can I just say that this is the BEST measuring tape EVER?
- Compact! It’s tinier than normal measuring tapes (I always keep it in my bag when I’m shopping because as (eye)candy said “each millimeter counts!”)
- Ergonomically shaped which is easier for my tiny hands to handle!
- The tape is harder and thicker than standard so that it doesn’t fold over when I am measuring longer objects (Awesome!)
- It remain extended by default until I press the release latch (as opposed to springing back by default, then having to lock it so it stays) which super convenient because I dislike it when I am trying to get an accurate measurement then the tape jiggles and misaligns because I pushed the lock. Grrr.
I can say with confidence that this is the best and most used item I’ve purchased from ACE Hardware so far. And the only excellently working Krisbow item I own! LOL. Both tools will be doing their own jobs in this DiploHousehold! Click here to read an article on Measuring Tape vs Folding Rule.
Another indispensable tool is my architect’s scale. No I don’t use it for scaling plans, but yes one day I plan to learn how to! Eight now it works fine in place of a regular ruler. I love that it’s not plastic and that I can use it to cut stuff on my cutting mat! With all my DIY projects, plastic rulers will not survive me!
What about you, what is your measuring tool of choice? Do you use it often in your household?
