Why I choose Natural Castile Handsoap for my family

August 15, 2019

As a mom who tries to be sustainable, I love local products that are 100% natural and even more when I have the option to buy refills in bulk. Imagine throwing away ONE PLASTIC BOTTLE each time we finish a beauty product and how much waste that produces?

So I want to tell you about my favorite Local Castille Soap Brand called Esscentials Manila. I wrote about them before because they are hands down the best and most convenient Christmas Gifts that you can get your friends.

More Sustainable Refillable Bottles

Not only are they beautifully packaged and lovingly handmade with essential oils, but I love telling the recipients of my gifts that once they finish the bottle, they don’t need to throw it away because they can easily order different sized refills – from 500ml to gallons like below.

Usually, a gallon this big lasts my whole household for 1 year. We use it on 4 sinks:

  1. master’s bathroom
  2. DiploBaby’s bathroom which is also our guest bathroom
  3. Kitchen
  4. Maid’s bathroom.

I always order the same essentials oil-based scent called Calming Green Tea, because it’s smells so good and clean. You can also get other products with the same scent, like their room spray (below), etc.

Imagine how much you would save, if you did not have to buy gift wrapping paper…. Now, imagine if you didn't have to buy or use tape, that doesn't get recycled…. This means that you save more, and the recipients of your gift dont have to tear the paper until no longer reusable, just to open your gift. Instructions on how to do here: https://www.minimaluxe.com/blog/tape-free-gift-wrapping-brown-paperbag Or click on the link in bio. Cheers to a #crapfreechristmas!

For gifts or giveaways, you can DIY like I did (above) with a Dymo Labeler or even better, you can have them totally personalized with their names in your chosen fonts!

Only Essential Oil Scents, Please!

I make it a point to order only Essential Oils based products from Esscentials Manila because they have other scents that use chemical Fragrances which I avoid because we don’t really know what nasties can hide in “fragrance” or “parfum.” Brands and Companies do not have to reveal the exact composition of “fragrance” or “parfum” because these are considered “trade secrets.”

I love working with Esscentials Manila’s Tina Palacios because she is so considerate of this and tells me which products are all-natural, and essential oil-based!

I’m confident that the handsoap the whole family uses, including my 4yo toddler is made with gentle natural ingredients.

Why Castile Soap?

Castile soap is a non-toxic, biodegradable soap usually made from olive oil, hemp, avocado or coconut oil.

  • No Nasties! Almost all soaps, shampoos and bubble baths use toxic sulfates that are drying to the skin to get more bubbles and give the users the impression that it’s really cleaning our skin when it’s actually drying it out.
  • Perfect for my sensitive skin. I have super dry skin, skin asthma and I’m mildly allergic to almost everything. Since castile soap is from safe, simple plant oils, it is considered safe for even the most sensitive skin – even babies or oily acne-prone skin!
  • Doesn’t dry or irritate the skin. It’s made with plant oils like olive oil or coconut oil, which are rich in healthy fats called monounsaturated fatty acids. This helps replenish the water level within the epidermis, resulting in supple, glowing skin.
  • Naturally hydrating. Creating castile soap produces glycerin, which most synthetic soaps remove, which is a shame considering glycerin absorbs water from the surrounding air, moisturizing your skin naturally
  • Doesn’t clog pores. Usually made from olive oil, castile soap lets our skin breathe and encourages shedding of dead skin cells. While synthetic soaps may irritate and block pores.
  • Rich in Antioxidants. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants like vitamins A and E and offers natural protection from free radicals. Regular use can help protect against skin cell degeneration and may delay aging or the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Soothes eczema, psoriasis, etc. Nutrient-rich olive oil also contains oleocanthal, a highly anti-inflammatory compound. Its anti-inflammatory action has been compared to that of Ibuprofen. As such, castile soap can help reduce inflammation – the origin of many of our irritating skin conditions.

How I use Esscentials Manila Gentle Liquid Castile Soap

They say Castille soaps don’t lather as much, but I don’t agree because how I use it creates an amazing luxurious nasty-free lather!

The best way, in my experience, is to mix

  • 1/3 or 1/2 liquid castile soap to
  • 2/3 or 1/2 water

in a Muji Foaming pump bottle (see above left clear bottle). I find that this is not only economical but also creates a luxurious experience when we are washing our hands. It’s also easy for DiploBaby to do!

  1. Pump foam directly to dry hands (no need to wet hands!)
  2. Rub together, in between fingers and rub fingernails onto the palm.
  3. Rinse with water.

Easy peasy right?

When you are a parent to a newborn or toddler we are perpetually washing our Little One’s and our own hands! Am I right?! It’s SO drying. But I don’t have to worry about this with Castile Soap!

Other uses of Castile Soap

  • Dishwashing soap
  • Fruit and veggie wash
  • Window cleaner
  • Laundry detergent
  • Toilet cleaner
  • Pet shampoo
  • Makeup brush cleaner
  • Menstrual cup cleaner
  • Plant spray for ants and other insects
  • Shaving cream
  • And so much more. See 22 Uses of Castile Soap for instructions!

Handy Travel/School Set

The small set on the left above is an amazing gift or giveaway for school-age kids because many schools here don’t have soap and bottles can be personalized with kids names so they don’t lose it at school (see below). This set contains:

  • Bug Off All-natural Insect Repellant
  • Calming Green Tea Gentle Liquid Soap (this is castile soap & non-drying)
  • Lavender Fields All-natural Hand Sanitizer OR you could also use instead MY LITTLE SECRET odor away spray (above right) to prevent embarrassing smells in the school lavatory! We have this odor remover in all our bathrooms at home too!

When you gift it, you can simply place a ribbon around it or just attach a cute tag like I did below (right top corner). I love telling parents that they can order refills for the bottles so no need to throw away when it’s done! All these little steps I take is me trying to be #BuhayZeroWaste – imperfectly of course!

This year Christmas is a lot simpler and scaled down for us. But even if you don’t have a high budget, I believe in wrapping thoughtfully and with lots of love, while being sustainable and less wasteful. My secret is not overwrapping. And using personalized cards (by @ccpoblador ) with a handwritten note/greeting – which recipients will hopefully like to reuse as bookmarks. A beautiful bow and gift card goes a long way. Wishing you all a more sustainable and less wasteful Christmas!

I loved this set so much that it was one of the freebies during my Declutter Your Mind and Space Workshop I held in my home, together with other local brands that I love!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BuNMAy2FEIC/

It is also my constant companion when I travel because it really declutters my packing – less big heavy bottles to bring!

Holy Week is a time most people here in the Philippines travel because of the long holiday. We personally don’t because we love how quiet and reflective Manila gets. No traffic or stress. I just wanted to share this nifty little pack that I don’t travel without. It’s the perfect set that I specifically requested for from @esscentials_manila so that she only used natural ingredients and essential oils. I don’t use synthetic fragrances in my body or home because “parfum” or synthetic fragrance is a mixture that companies don’t have to disclose because it’s considered a trade secret. But a lot of nasties can be hiding in their. We aren’t so strict with labeling here in the Philippines so I love brands that are willing to work with their customers who are specific and trying to use healthier ingredients. Tina of Esscentials Manila is so easy to talk to. This set contains: bug off, liquid soap and hand sanitizer. It’s perfect especially when you encounter bathrooms that don’t have soap, and of course bugs always abound in the tropics – no matter how perfect looking those beach pics are – it’s hot and bugs love the heat! We gave each of the participants of the #DMNLxMartine Declutter Your Mind & Life Workshop one of these packs. I hope you all found it useful ladies! Personally this has decluttered the contents of my bag and Lightened our diaper bags contents.

SNOW FUN IN LAPLAND We arrived at the perfect tim SNOW FUN IN LAPLAND

We arrived at the perfect time in @santaclausvillage_rovaniemi. It was cold but not like the week before wherein it was -18 C low.

So we managed with our UNIQLO Ultra Light Down Jackets. I still brought waterproof jackets just in case but the most important to bring were the WATERPROOF SNOW GLOVES because @diplobaby loved playing with the snow so much & its essential for SLEDDING. When they fall of they need the gloves to protect their hands from getting wounded and the ice.

@glass_resort lends out kids sleds for free. My son loved it!

Hope you enjoyed seeing us enjoy the snow. SAVE THIS post if you plan on visiting Rovaniemi in Finland with your kids!

GLASS RESTAURANT We were so lucky our GLASS APAR GLASS RESTAURANT

We were so lucky our GLASS APARTMENT in @glass_resort was so near their beautiful restaurant GLASS RESTAURANT.

I initially wasn’t attracted to Finnish food but they changed my mind guys! Who knew?!?

Read my review of their BREAKFAST BUFFET & ALA CARTE MENU here:

https://undiplomaticwife.com/glass-restaurant-rovaniemi/

It was the perfect place to eat after a long day of walking. It allowed us to try the best versions of FINNISH FOOD that we might not have been brave enough otherwise.

We got to try moose, reindeer & salmon soup which are delicacies of the region. We were all very surprised by how delicious everything was.

You can see @diplobaby’s face after he found out he was eating reindeer. I told him they are retired reindeer and he ask for a bit more. I guess the foodie in him is strong. 😂🤭 taste surpasses all!

We also had TD’s birthday dinner there and they were so nice to serve the cake with a candle & a song. So sweet and definitely made us so happy!

We also enjoyed their breakfast buffet. The meatballs were especially delicious.

The restaurant and buffet are small but mighty. You can tell you are having high quality food.

So many firsts in this restaurant & so many memories we treasure as a family.

Have you had Finnish cuisine? What’s your favorite?

ARCTIC OUTDOOR HOT TUB + SAUNA Did you guys know ARCTIC OUTDOOR HOT TUB + SAUNA

Did you guys know that

“The Finnish sauna is a substantial part of Finnish and Estonian culture. It was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists on December 17, 2020”

With over 3.3Million saunas for 5.5million inhabitants in Finland, it’s normal for a home or even a flat to have a sauna. (Figure from @vivefinlandia)

Naturally our GLASS APARTMENT in @glass_resort had a fabulous on inside the bathroom.

It was @diplobaby’s first time & we asked the staff for recommendations to make his first experience a good one. He told us to lower the temp to 55C & have Jim’s sit in the bottom.

Our nervous son who usually doesn’t like the sound of fire crackling was able to over come his fear because he wanted to be the one to pour the water on the piping hot rocks. I just had to tell him not to do it so much so it wouldn’t be too hot.

I asked the staff how young kids sauna here & he said he’s been going since he was a baby!

As for the HOT TUB - it’s all of our first time to do it outdoors in the freezing arctic.

They showed us how to open & close the tub plus where NOT to step because it’s slippery. That’s why TD had to hang our robes from inside the tob.

It was a magical experience to be in a hot tub while looking up at the stars surrounded by snow in the Arctic. It was freezing for sure going in and out. Just think that cold exposure is actually healthy. SO against Filipino culture agains LAMIG (cold)!

Such a wonderful experience as a family! So grateful that we decided to do this for TD’s birthday last April! So worth it. We have him small inexpensive gifts because the true gift was this experience.

DINO WORLD EXPO One of the exhibitions that weren DINO WORLD EXPO

One of the exhibitions that weren’t here when we first went to @signaldebougy is the @dinoworldexpo. I was delighted that it was as interesting for the adults as it was for the kids.

It closes at 7pm & we started at about 5:40pm already but it only takes 1-2hrs so we just hurried walking around so in other parts there was time to play.

What were the highlights for us?

- EXCAVATION a sandbox upgrade, making the littles feel like paleontologist
- ROBOTIC DINOS with interesting information
- QR codes if you want an AUDIO GUIDED TOUR
- GIANT AERIAL TRAMPOLINE was something new for @diplobaby
- AUGMENTED REALITY SANDBOX was super cool!
- DINO GOLF was fun for our group

What we didn’t get to do:
- BOUNCY LABYRINTH coz we didn’t have time anymore
- THE FOSSIL RIVER coz you have to buy a bag of sand to do it

I’m glad we had time to have this fun experience after @accrobranche (see previous reels) because not only did we learn stuff, but it was a lot of fun!

DINO WORLD EXPO is open everyday 10am to 7pm until 20 August 2023 Signal de Bougy. There are 2 parking areas, but we opted to go later in the day - 230pm - so some people were already leaving and we found parking easily.

This place is around 40minutes give or take depending on where you live in Geneva.
