Last night I tried to watch the Spain vs Portugal Semi-finals. It was really exciting despite being 0-0 for the entire game. The pace was so much faster than the boring game versus France. I guess both sides were pressuring the ball more, unlike how France just allowed Spain to keep on passing the ball ’round and ’round (boooooring!). Last nights game was so long that I passed out. They went on 30min overtime then finally to the super exciting penalties. (VIDEO of penalties after the jump!)
Watched this video below of the penalties again and again. That ‘Panenka’ penalty by Sergio Ramos was AMAZING. He definitely deserves the Man-of-the-Match award.
Sergio Ramos admitted that the chipped penalty that gave Spain the initiative in their 4-2 penalty shoot-out win over Portugal in the Euro 2012 semi-finals had been planned in advance….”I’d planned it in advance, I won’t lie,” he told reporters after receiving the man-of-the-match award.
‘Panenka’ penalties are named after Antonin Panenka, whose nonchalant chipped penalty in the 1976 European Championship final gave the Czech Republic victory over defending champions West Germany.
Spain won over Portugal with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out in the Euro 2012 Semi-finals. I wonder who they will be up against in the finals, Italy or Germany. Italy has never ever lost to Germany in a major finals. Will Germany finally break this record? What do you think? Who are you hoping to go into the finals against Spain? Let’s discuss!
