When we first arrived in Jakarta, we were taken to Gourmet Garage by friends A and J, who said they usually take visitors here. Since then we haven’t really been back because there are SO many restaurants to try in Jakarta and traffic is usually bad in Kemang. But we’ve always wanted to go back.
One weekend, we finally did. I was looking forward to the yummy nachos which is a rarity here in Jakarta. There are so very few Mexican/TexMex here and even then they aren’t that great either. I especially love the generous guacamole on this one.
TD said his cheese steak was good and they used high quality beef, but it definitely didn’t come close to Charlie’s Fili Cheese steak in Manila (which by now is his benchmark for all cheese steaks).
I was saving a small crispy piece for my last bite, then when I bit into it, IT DIDN’T TASTE LIKE FISH! I guess some chicken was mixed up with our fish. I was almost full but not, quite and that last bite with some chips would have been the perfect ending to my meal.
We informed our waitress of what happened and showed her the chicken. She brought my plate to the chef and came back apologizing and asking us to wait for a few minutes. I told her I didn’t want a replacement for the entire dish and if she would be so nice as to just replace that one piece. She was very gracious handling the situation and it went without a hitch – now THAT’S good customer service!
I was also pleasantly surprised to be brought a small basket of 3 pieces as a replacement despite my request for only one. Compared to Fish and Chips Kemang, the batter of this is not as crunchy, but the flavor was just as good and it was much less oily! Malt vinegar was also served upon request.
All in wall it was a pleasant dining experience in a cozy ambiance. And I was so happy to have a little taste of good Mexican here in Jakarta with the Nachos.

Did they change the name??? I liked the name “Gourmet Garage”!! This is also my very first restaurant that we went in Jakarta!! I was very impressed by it.
Yes they did change it. I personally preferred Gourmet Garage myself – think it’s more catchy! I guess it’s really an expat staple in Jakarta! LOL!
