Our favorite brunch spot in HCMC

August 9, 2012

This was our favorite place to have breakfast in HCMC Vietnam on out trip there last November 2011. All thanks to Chie of The Nomad’s Black Book for recommending this fab resto! The best thing about it is it’s totally walking distance from our hotel, La Jolie. The food is great and cheaper than Jakarta for this kind of ambiance and quality of food (think cheap Social House). Again this is late (as you will notice the Christmas decor hehe) but I am finally posting it because my friends Bea and Martin are going and I promised to give them a HCMC Hitlist (coming soon!).

It’s tucked in a little alley full of painting vendors off the main street of Đồng Khởi (near the Christian Louboutin boutique).  You might get confused at first. but just walk to the end of this and you’ll see signs leading up!

I absolutely ADOR the interior design of the place. I even love the location. Despite being in convenient and busy Đồng Khởi  street, it is still private and cozy. It’s industrial-chic made homey – it just makes you wanna have a long drawn out breakfast/brunch with a book OR magazine. It’s also the perfect place to get some work done with free WIFI.

Every morning we would split a Bánh mì – a Vietnamese baguette sandwiches stuffed with veggies and meat. The French-influenced  Baguette is crusty on the outside and airy on the inside. The servings in L’Usine are big with a yummy side salad so perfect for breakfast with our favorite Vietnamese iced coffee. Salivating just thinking about it!

This particular meal was brunch so we decided to take advantage of the cheap prices (again by Jakarta standards) and order a cheese platter (VND 110,000 or about USD 5.30) and a glass of house wine (VND 85 or USD 4) for me. For dessert we had a red velvet cupcake which was  perfectly moist and delicious.

After you’ve had our fill, you can check out their fabulous store. Unfortunately they don’t allow taking pictures inside so I only got to take that one shot below. Their lifestyle store has chic, cute and quirky apparel, accessories, home decor, kitchen accessories , etc. I thought of Chuzai Living when I was in their store. Below are a few of my finds.

The items they have in the store aren’t cheap, but are of good quality and design. I really would’ve wanted one of the red bird cages but I think I shopped enough already! I got these Wetter Wonton bamboo tweezers (VND 130,000 or USD 6 est.) which I use for cooking or as serving tongs. Super useful! My Bruneian friend taught me that tongs are  great for cooking noodles. #SoTrue. I also got Wetter Wonton small bamboo spoons (VND 220,000 or USD 10) for tucking into jars of tea leaves, sugar, etc.

Bamboo is an eco-friendly material and and easily renewable resource that does not use any pesticides. Bamboo is naturally antibacterial that resists mold, which makes it hygienic for kitchen or bathroom use .

I also got this long necklace (I had to wind it double to fit in the picture) that is made to benefit an orphanage. The thin chain is delicate but sturdy, and the crocheted accents are unique. I love that some of the crocheted rings are metallic.  Fashion for a cause. #Loveit

I loved L’Usine. It was such a lovely place to be at. Also I was so surprised that most of the really nice cafes in HCMC were on the first floor. You really had to know about the place to go up there.
We went three times in our week in HCMC because we enjoyed it so much. )

Exactly! I am so lucky a friend recommended L’Usine to me. How did you find out about L’Usine? We had breakfast there during our whole visit. It’s definitely my happy place in HCMC.

Every year I add a little bit more to my Halloween Every year I add a little bit more to my Halloween decor collection so it’s not so heavy on the wallet. I’m so happy with this year’s finds & make sure to carefully store them so they have many more years of use.

It was @diplobaby’s idea to add googly eyes to the bats. So we did it together! I love the one eyed bats 🦇 and I love it when we decorate together! Definitely one for the core memory banks! 👻🎃🤍

I was tickled pink coz people would pass by and take pics, stare or even tell me good job. 🎃 Halloween is really my favorite holiday!

What do you think of our Halloween prep this year?

#udwhalloween
I couldn’t stop laughing! It was still a little I couldn’t stop laughing! It was still a little too long for him this year but we sure got a kick from it.

DM me if you want to know where to order!

VILLAGE PUMPKIN CARVING EVENT Every year I look f VILLAGE PUMPKIN CARVING EVENT

Every year I look forward to this event for families in our village. We also invite our friends outside the village coz it’s so much fun for families. Parents and kids can come in costume. It’s done beside a fabulous park so kids can run around and play.

The pumpkins 🎃 might be overpriced (the bigger ones went from chf 18 last year to chf 23 this year) BUT it includes the free use of NIFTY CARVING TOOLS, waste disposal, clean up & cute decor that the organizers have provided.

We draw together. TD removes the guts. Then @diplobaby & i do the carving together with our son and it’s a controlled way of showing him how to use the tools in a safe way. Which is something I appreciate in Europe.

One year we tried pumpkin 🎃 carving at home and clean up was a totally nightmare. Never doing it again!

Then when kids and parents are are hungry we can buy food & drinks.

We go home with a carved pumpkin 🎃 & don’t have to do the clean up. The pumpkin guts are also turned into soup by the organizers.

It’s also a good way for parents to unwind, catch up while the kids play in the playground. We usually see our neighbors here too.

It’s a win win for everyone & it reduces unused waste. I love it so much!

We never did pumpkins before coz it would rot@so fast in Asia. But i the past 3 seasons of doing this I’ve learned so many tips and tricks for pumpkin 🎃 carving - especially how to prevent molds and insects. Let me know if you want me to do a separate post on that!

Hi guys it’s been a while since I’ve posted ab Hi guys it’s been a while since I’ve posted about our #DiploHome.

This is our BALCONY/TRASH SEGREGATION AREA.

Because we use it to entertain in SPRING & AUTUMN (too hot & too many insects in summer) I made sure that the trash segregation remains AESTHETIC by using white @ikeaschweiz SEGREGATION BINS.

So far SWITZERLAND TRASH SEGREGATION in our experience is even more complex than GERMANY but it has led to at least 50% RECYCLING rate which is pretty good, even though Germany still has the highest rate of recycling 66%

Let me know if you want to know more about how we manage trash in our village.
