How to Organize Wires and Your Drawer

June 26, 2010

Sick and tired of all those wires, chargers, and plugs? How about the bottomless pit that is your drawer? Have no fear, Diplo Wife is here!

Home Organization Project 1:   ALL THOSE PESKY WIRES

BEFORE: Modem, router, extension cord, chargers, etc. I’ve already made the effort of organizing the cords, but it’s just not enough!

I just hate seeing wires on the floor.

#1 I am allergic to dust and disorganized wires are the best place for it to accumulate because it’s hard to clean daily

#2 We have a Pomeranian that sheds a lot of hair and the hairs love getting stuck in those wires. Can I just say hairballs? (gross!)

#3 Wires are an eyesore. That’s why I love wireless – my wireless earphones/phone headset (I can toggle between listening to music on my Blackberry and answering calls) & wireless printer (yes I can print from anywhere in the house) because it’s just less wires to think about.

Our modem & router were on my husband’s side table, on the space that was supposed to be for books.  I resolved that one day I would stick them on to the wall together with the cords so that it would be easier for the maid to sweep dust off the floor & that the space would be finally be used for something else.

AFTER: You can barely see the pesky wires & electronics!

Voila! The modem, router & all the cords are now stuck to the wall.

Extension cord is stuck to the bed, & wires to the underside of the table.

I used  3M command products so that the walls & furniture are not damaged when I take items off. These are my favorite organizing products, because you can stick almost anything without damaging the surfaces. If I make a mistake, I just get another strip & try again with no problems. This is especially helpful for people who are renting and would not want to be charged for damages to the unit.

  • Picture Hanging Strips for the modem & router – these velcro strips makes it possible to take it off and put them back on the wall.
  • Mounting Strips for the securing extension cord & other pesky items.

Also instead of using twisties to shorten the wires, I used these really cool velcro wire ties which you first secure around the wire then you can wrap them around the bunch. It comes in gray and black.

Home Organization Project 2:  STUDY TABLE DRAWER FULL OF JUNK

Muji Drawer Organizers (Left). The one on the right is a binder I got to organize all my recipes.

Okay they’re not really junk, but they might as well be. The drawer was so messy that none of the items inside got used, because it was just too much of a hassle to dig in and look for something. But thanks to drawer organizers from Muji, everything has its own place and easy to get to!

Now it’s so easy to take out the top layers to see the stuff in the bottom! There is space for another layer of organizers so I’ll add another one to max out the space =)

Great job!! I love organizing ideas, too and I’m a big fan of MUJI! I wish their prices here are much lower. I miss the time back when the MUJI products were much much cheaper. I’m talking over 10 years ago…

And I hear they are much more expensive here than in HK. Sigh. That’s the only thing, they tax imported products pretty high here so it’s even much more expensive than it already is =(
