Hanidas Folding Mattress-Maker

April 21, 2013

I finally got some guest mattresses made! The best thing about them is that they fold, for easy storage when they are not in use! I got the idea from my friend Lia, who has a few for when her kids want to sleep in the room with them. I don’t know why I waited so long to have them made.

I got the black foam, and the standard cotton mix fabric in a preppy beige color. I didn’t make it too thick because it’s not going to be used everyday. I would recommend thicker use for something that will be used more often. For kids, I think the thickness is fine because they are lighter. I also requested for zippers so that I can remove the cover and wash it.

When I laid it out at home, guess who quickly plopped on top?!? DiploDog! He probably thought, “Yay new bed for me!” Haha!

If you go to this mattress-maker in Kemang, you can decide on…

  • What kind of foam to use
  • How thick
  • How many times it will fold when stored
  • What fabric and color

…based on what you need it for and your budget! They have all kinds of options! It’s a teeny-tiny place in Kemang, at the beginning of the same street and side as Cayenne.

This kind of folding-mattress is useful for:

  • Guests who are couch surfing
  • thinner ones for children’s play-mats
  • temporary mattresses for kids in their parent’s room

Hmmmm…What other uses can you think of? I’d love it if you could add to my list!

IMPORTANT TIPS:

1. While you are inquiring and negotiating, ask him to write down the pricing and explain so you know what the different cost are. He usually breaks it down into 1) foam, 2) fabric/material cost and 3) labor. So you know where you can adjust your design, to cut on cost. The second time I returned to order a smaller mattress one week after, I was very surprised that he quoted a higher price! It took a while to sort out that something smaller should not cost more. I got a $5 discount on a much smaller folding mattress, but I’m trying not to feel too bad. The service is fast after all. And I haven’t found any other place that makes the same item. So just pay attention to what you are being charged for, and double-check the calculation.

2. When I picked up my second order, it was more difficult than the first time. He claimed I didn’t order an extra cover for the smaller mattress. I had to insist he check what he wrote down on the receipt. I paid for a second cover. Then he said I can get the 4pcs and come back for the last pc tomorrow, but I had to pay in full today. So I told him, I can get partial (2pcs) today and come back for the (3pcs) and pay the balance tomorrow. He didn’t want. So I told him I would come back for my complete order the next day and pay in full the next day. Why would I pay in total, if my complete order hasn’t been fulfilled? It just didn’t make sense to me. The main thing is I should’ve ordered everything the first time around because they are still trying to get business from me. And the second order was nowhere as fast or as easy as before – I had to be on my toes. Have everything written down in the receipt, because his memory is not very good and you could get less than what you paid for.

All in all, my only regret is not having my orders made on my first visit so I could have gotten better prices. But I am happy with the mattress themselves. I don’t know any other place that does this with someone who speaks English and these prices. If you do have other recommendations, I’d love to hear from you.

Other items that they can do for you (but some basic Bahasa is required):

  • Full sized mattresses
  • Window treatments/curtains
  • Throw pillows and other textile needs

Do you by chance remember how much you paid for the folding mattress? I would like to order one but would love to have an idea of the price.
        Thanks a lot

Dear Linda, gosh I should have written it down. Thank you so much for reminding me! Right now I cannot seem to locate my OR, I am sure they are lost to the oblivion of moving. If I remember correctly I paid more or less $100 for 2 mattresses that were 1 meter wide. Again this can vary by a lot depending on the thickness of the foam, type of foam, fabric, zippers, etc. that you choose. My recommendation would be to go there and get a quotation to have an idea of how much it is. The prices are rising very fast in Jakarta so I always try to get stuff sooner than later, because if I wait a few months the prices are higher already. I hope this helps!

I will definitely ask for a quotation. Thanks for answering so fast. Are you still happy with your hallway furniture done by Danny? Are they still in great condition? Did they survive the European weather? I contacted him for a shoe furniture but thought I would ask you first since I found his name on your blog. Thanks a lot!

Dear Linda, I have been and still am very happy with my furniture from Danni. But I have to also let you know that wood is a natural material and it can expand and contract especially with very humid hot weather and then turning on the air conditioning in the evening and the air gets dried out. Even if I did use antique/recycled teak there is still a chance for cracking. For example many of the antique furniture that are sold are actually imperfect, for sure there are cracks, but these are retouched with wood glue and fillers. However the difference between Danni and other furniture makers is his customer service. You don’t need to go through traffic to get to his store and all his creations are made to measure. If there are any cracks (and I experienced this one especially hot summer with visitors using the AC during the evenings) he fixes it immediately. If the crack is because the batch of wood is not as great as the supplier made it out to be, then Danni replaces it for free. This is something he offers to his customers that are based in Jakarta. So I always recommend to my friends if they re planning on investing in teak, to buy at the soonest possible time (not right before leaving the post) because then they will see if there is a problem with the wood and Danni can fix it. If you order it right before leaving post then there is a problem with the wood, then you’ll spend money on fixing it. Whereas if you are still in Jakarta then Danni will fix it free of charge.

I had a friend who bought really cheap teak furniture in Ciputat, the wood cracked so big (up to 5cm) and the furniture maker took so long to replace it. It was a real hassle for them. If I had cracks with Danni’s furniture, it was small and he was able to fix it in my home with some wood glue. And he was very quick to respond to my problems. I can say that of all the suppliers and shops I’ve encountered in Jakarta, Danni has the best customer service and his dedication to quality is something I didn’t encounter in many places.

My furniture are doing well so far in Europe and they withstood the stress of travel via shipping. This is probably a combination of factors, good quality workmanship of the furniture and also great handling by Santa Fe shipping company.

If you really don’t want your furniture to crack you can try a mixture of Teak and Teakboard (plywood using teak shavings). This is what companies like Dunia Yogyakarta use, because they ship their furniture to Europe. My L-shaped coach is from Dunia. Personally my preference is Danni because I like to customise and have smart space saving furniture.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It is very kind of you especially that you don’t live in Jakarta anymore. I love the way you think of everything and admire how practical you can be. I am totally the opposite so your post is a great help.
