Another place I regularly go to for home decor in Jakarta is Koncept Gallery Kemang. It is a small shop that is split into two sides. Both are called Koncept, but each side is owned by a different family member. I usually go to the left side of the store for my bespoke decor needs, but sometimes I also explore the right side. They both have lovely items.
Custom-made Framed Batik Stamp
This is where I had my old batik stamp framed. They are very good at this and can do many different styles. It’s also quite affordable at only IDR 150.000. Right now this framed batik stamp is hanging over my hallway. We did not use teak for this frame or it would be too heavy to hang. I had her to the frame in matte white, with the stamp backing in matte gold.
Custom-made Teak Display Stand
They are also able to do teak stands with some simple iron works like this stand that I had made for TD’s antique gun.
Bamboo Ladders
I used to get my bamboo ladders from Chic Mart however they are a bit too skinny for me so I sold them in search of thicker bamboo ladders which I found at a very affordable price here in Koncept Kemang. There were a few issues
- Anti-termite – they did not spray it with anti-termite protection so I had to bring the ladders back and ask them to spray it. If you get ladders from them make sure to ask them to spray it before pick up
- The finish – I asked for a light natural finish, but it wasn’t very nice. I had to bring it back several times because the quality of the finish was not consistent for both ladders.
I finally gave up and painted the ladders myself! I did both in semi-gloss white paint from ACE which is low VOC so once the paint dries there are no more harmful fumes. I sanded both ladders and also used a base coat first before I painted them.
It was important to me that the ladders were painted well (including the tops and bottoms) because I use them as towel and clothing racks in my bathroom and when it’s not sanded well then clothes can get stained or snag. After this project I realised it was easier to do it myself rather than return to concept 4 times and be unhappy with the product. I cannot complain though because they were selling the ladders really cheap and it was the only place I could find that sold this kind of ladders. (Isn’t is so weird when Indonesia has so much bamboo?)
Quality and Timely Delivery Issues
I can recommend concept because of their affordable prices but usually I don’t get their furniture (which are also quite affordable) because I think that the quality of my furniture maker Danni is much better and by Indonesian standards Danni delivers on time or usually informs me ahead if he can’t. I am pretty anal about details and quality control. With Danni if I have a problem he comes over to my flat to fix it or to pick it up. With Koncept, there were many times when I went to their shop in Kemang at the agreed pick up date only for them to tell me that it was not ready and I had to come back 2 or 3 more times until I got the item. So with Koncept you have to call first before heading over so you don’t go through terrible Kemang traffic for nothing. Their prices are really low though so for a bargain hunter like me, it was worth the stress.
For investment teak furniture I would still highly recommend getting here and here because the quality is much higher. But for small decorative items, I find Konsep has great value for money.
