MANILA FINDS: Junk food

April 15, 2011

It’s funny that things you take for granted or barely ate when you were home are missed so much when you are posted in another country! Here are some of the bad stuff that I avoided when I was still living in Manila that I crave for in Jakarta!

marty's vegetarian cracklings, boy bawang, skittles

Boy Bawang Cornick in Garlic Flavor (I really don’t like the ones in other funky flavors – classic is still the best!). This massive pack I’ve only seen in NAIA 3 for Php 200. Totally worth it for me! They have a similar snack here in Indonesia but it lacks the salty, garlicky crunch that I am used to.

Oishi vegetarian chicharon called Marty’s Cracklin’ Vegetarian Chicharon in Salt and Vinegar flavor (Php 50 at NAIA 3). One time I bought Lapids chicharon and brought it to Jakarta… however when I tried these I now prefer it over real chicharon. I don’t know which is less unhealthy but taste-wise I prefer the Oishi chicharon – the perfect combination of salty and sour!

Skittles! (Php 150 or 3.5 USD) Sometimes i remember how sweet and tangy it is and I ask TD for some. He buys me some fruity Mentos flavors as a substitute here in Jakarta. But nothing comes close to Skittles! Anyone know where I can get Skittles in Jakarta? Let me know!

And last but not the least are my favorite Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups! (Php 110 or 2.5 USD for a pack of 10 cups) If you know where I can get these in Jakarta please let me know in the comment section below! I will be eternally grateful!

I got both the Skittles and the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups at great prices at Cash & Carry Makati! I only brought a pack of each so savoring every bite and only having them as treats. Sorry if I am not sharing friends. =P

    We love Marty’s Cracklin’ too!

(We always wonder why no one comes close to the original Lapid’s chicharon– as their tagline claims, the Rolls Royce of chicharon -LOL!)

I never looked into it closely – so is it really healthier than real chicharon? =)

I love skittles and Reese’s peanut butter cups!!! I would love to know if they are available here, but I’m afraid the peanut butter cups would be double the price. Marty’s Cracklin’ looks yummy!

Hi Kaho, I’m sure it will be double or more! Which is why I am totally hoarding mine hehe =P I’m wondering why Oishi is not brining Marty’s Cracklins here – it would be perfect because it’s not pork! But the Indonesian market is not fond of sour stuff so it would’t be worth their while I guess…
