I normally do not like to write negative posts on my blog, but this is just to warn others that this is a possibility with a couch cover and reupholster that I have used several times for a number of years.
This happened when we had just arrived from Berlin in 2016 and it was quite difficult for me to talk about then, and then my husband got sick so it totally slipped my mind. I recently discovered the pictures I took so I want to share my experience with DLS Upholstery as a review.
They were very good at reupholstering sofas and making covers for an affordable price. Depending on your budget, the quality could be really good value for an affordable price. I would even recommend them to friends.
But I do not recommend them for heirloom quality pieces or things that are not common here in Manila, because they can totally ruin it. I have a beloved leather bench – super high quality – from Indonesia. I sent it to them so they could make a cover for it since our legs stick to leather in the humid climate of Manila.
You can see it below. It’s the bench that DiploDog is sitting on when our Jakarta Home was featured on the Living ETC Magazine. This bench is a hardworking and important piece of our home, because it’s where I place all my gift-wrapping materials and gifts. It’s our “Gift Bench.”

The DLS owner/manager is usually very professional. I forget her name but she would even come over and our process has always been this:
- They will assess the item to be covered or reupholstered
- They give me a quote for the material and color that I choose
- Then if I approved the proposal, I would give a down payment
- Then they would work on it.
But something else happened when I sent the bench. I did not hear from them and no matter how much I followed up on the quotation, I did not hear anything.
Then one day out of the blue the owner/manager calls me to tell me they are delivered my bench. I was shocked because I never approved anything, how could they have finished work on it already. I didn’t even know how much they were charging and I never sent a downpayment.
It was very suspicious. When the bench arrived I found out why. I specifically asked for A BENCH COVER. I did not want to have the bench reupholstered, but they did it anyway. The fabric upholstery was very well done, though the fabric is thin and not high quality. It really cheapened the expensive bench.

But more importantly, I wanted a cover to protect my bench, not for it to be brutally taken apart. They knew the leather was expensive because they did not throw it away. I asked for it back.

Imagine, why would they ruin such a beautiful well-made and expensive leather furniture? I don’t know. My only guess is that it was so seamlessly made that they wanted to take it apart to copy the design. When I mentioned this to the lady owner/manager she did not deny it.

Sure they put it back together, but it was so ugly already after. I barely got an apology, nor did I get payment for damages. Imagine bringing a Luis Vuitton bag to be fitted with a rain cover and instead, they take it apart at the seams. Even if they put that bag together, it’s never going to be the same.
The edges were already ruined and sewing back into the ripped holes tore it even more. We took such good care of this piece and brought it with us from Indonesia to Germany to the Philippines keeping it in amazing condition. Only for someone to take it apart and destroy it.

I realized now, I should have asked them to reupholster it in new and equally expensive leather. But during that time I was so overwhelmed with the move to Manila and a newborn, that I didn’t even think about it.
Again sorry for the negativity. I hate writing negative reviews but hope that this also serves as a PSA for people who might be bringing them special and imported pieces to cover. So that this doesn’t happen to you.
