JAKARTA EATS: Tsukinofune Japanese Restaurant [CLOSED]

September 23, 2011

We have a new favorite Japanese restaurant in Jakarta. And fortunately for us it is cheaper than Sekitei, which we reserve for more special occasions and romantic dinners. TD finally took me to Tsukinofune for my birthday weekend after raving about it for 2 weeks! =P

UPDATE: This restaurant has closed down. Too bad as it was my favorite Japanese restaurant in Jakarta. According to Michael, the chef has moved to Kamogawa in Pavilion. Not sure where it is but will definitely do a little more research.

It’s a casual resto, that according to TD is always filled with Japanese customers whenever they eat there. (Always a good sign!)

I love how everything is presented, from the beautiful clear teapots and cups to how they serve soft drinks (with ice on the side)!

TD loves the chicken gyoza, but since it wasn’t available we got the shrimp one. It was pretty yummy for me, but according to TD the chicken is even better. Gyoza on skillet with 2 dipping sauces.

Best part of our meal was the beef teriyaki with veggies and roasted garlic (love!)

It also came with chawan mushi (egg custard, but the name literally “tea cup steam” or “steamed in a tea bowl,”   salad, miso soup, fried tofu (with a salty topping) and dessert. I’ve never met a chawan mushi I liked, so liking the chawanmushi was a first for me!

Salmon Camembert roll. Normally TD only likes classic makis, but he loved this one. It sat in a bed of yummy mushrooms (?). It had so much camembert that I felt like they used an wheel! SO YUM.

Everything was SO delicious and pretty. The servers were attentive to every detail (except they seemed to disappear at the end of the meal) and you could tell that careful thought was made with every aspect of the restaurant – even the water glass had a creative design! Totally my kind of resto!

Close up of the gyoza and camembert roll. It’s also my first time to have gyoza served like a cake. It looks like it’s one piece then you break it apart? Is this traditional?

The servings are big and they use fresh wasabi. It’s not really cheap, but for the excellent quality of the meal, I felt like it was well worth it! So long Tsukinofune! Till next time!

Below are the details in case you wanna try it out. Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Hi Nipnip, sorry I don’t know. I think the last time I passed by it was under construction. =( I suggest you try calling Ambara hotel to inquire.
