MANILA EATS: BonChon twice fried chicken

July 26, 2012

Sometimes you just need fast food and I’m definitely not above a Mc Donalds double cheeseburger or  gravy soaked KFC chicken breast (white meat lover!) but the choices are very few. The last time we were in Manila we had a crazy 2 week renovation/retouch schedule so we had to have fast food and I remembered  reading about Bon Chon on Erica Paredes’ blog and twitter. We finally got to try it! Yay! I’m happy that there’s another fast-food option in Manila (and Jakarta!).

Bonchon Chicken (Hangul: 본촌치킨; Hanja: 本村치킨) is a South Korean-based fried chicken franchise restaurant.[1]. In addition to locations in South Korea, there are also several Bonchon Chicken locations within the United States, Philippines, and Thailand. Korean fried chicken differs from typical American fried chicken by being fried twice. This results in the skin being crunchier and less greasy. Furthermore, Korean-style chicken is not characterized by the crags and crusty nubs associated with American fried chicken. A number of other traditional Korean dishes are also on the menu…. BonChon Chicken is now opened in USA, Thailand, Philippines, Korea and Indonesia. The first restaurant opened in 2002 in Busan, Korea.

I definitely recommend only ordering the wings. It’s currently my favorite chicken wings – SO crispy! I like the spicy sauce but I absolutely lovd the  soy garlic flavor (you can choose between the 2). We loved it so much that we had it 3 times in one week too! Haha! What a coincidence… it’s addicting but I agree with Erica, you definitely need a break from it too. =)

It’s not as quick as other fast-food because they prepare it fresh. It’s a great thing to order ahead for pick up. I also love that they have other Korean dishes that don’t feel fast-food-y and that they also sell good imported beers (perfect with chicken wings!) like Hoegaarden, etc. It’s popping up all over the Philippines so click on the link below for complete list of locations. Chicken BonChon is now available in Jakarta. I haven’t tried it yet but you can check out the link below for a review from Selby’s Food Corner.

Have you tried Chicken BonChon? Where did you try it? I would love to hear what you think!

There is one in Grand Indo. It looks yummy, but I have never tried it. Why does it have to be twice fried? Isn’t once enough? 🙂
