JAKARTA EATS: Kenganga Roast and Barbecue Pork

April 11, 2013

This is one of our favorite cheap places to eat pork in Jakarta. Again this is nothing posh, its a hole in the wall where you are literally using one hand to eat and another to swat flies off. But the taste of the pork and dirt cheap prices keep us coming back.

The sate babi, reminds us of Pinoy pork BBQ. YUM! Make sure to ask for some kecap manis and douse the sate babi.

This is what my meal usually looks like. Instead of getting the nasi campur (rice with a little of everything on top) we just ask for the babi panggan (crispy roast pork), sate babi with nasi Hainam (hainanese rice). It comes with a little bowl of soup which you can also spoon over your rice – yuuuummmmm.

I highly recommend takeaway. And despite being a hole in the wall and flies, I haven’t gotten sick.

This is the famous nasi campur with nasi hainam. You can see the pigs ears, babi merah (red pork), egg and some sort of minced meat in a ball. On your first visit, I would recommend you try this, so you can taste everything, and on your next visit you can just ask for the stuff you like. They usually keep the portions the same no matter what you have. They are quite big portions too.20130331-130313.jpg

The same thing, but on top of mie (noodles). I find the nasi hainam (hainan rice) much better than the mie (noodle) version. But worth a try for noodle lovers. 20130331-130335.jpg

Kenganga is definitely a must try in Jakarta, if you love pork. But it’s definitely only for those who aren’t too squeamish about flies. This is just a little above eating in a warung, because though it’s still a bit warm inside, there is some air-conditioning.

Try the one in Pondok Indah. No flies dan the place is so much cleaner. If you’re in Grand Wijaya, try KACA MATA. Similar to Kenanga but lot’s of people said it much tastier.

Hi Wulan, thank you for the info. I am sure other readers who are near Ponkok Indah appreciate the info. I have tried the babi merah in Kaca Mata and it was soooo tasty! Any other dishes I should try there?

My gosh, those macro pork pictures are super drooling. It is still my fav nasi campur. But if you want to experiment with a few contenders try Apollo, and this stall inside ITC Mangga Dua, nameless. Now that’s the worse hole in a wall. Haha

Wow that is such a wonderful compliment especially from such an amazing food photographer and blogger like you! Can you believe these were all taken with an iPhone? Thanks for the recommendations! Hole in the wall indeed! If it is a nameless…how does one find it? =p
