JAKARTA EATS: May Star Chinese Restaurant

November 15, 2011

TD heard about this restaurant because it’s one of the few restaurants in our side of town that serves pork. Pork is more common in the Northern part of Jakarta because there are a lot of Chinese Indonesians that live up there. As you know Indonesians are predominantly Muslim so we’ve missed pork during our stay here. It’s always a big deal for us Pinoys to find a pork-serving resto!

Just wanna share some iPhone photos of our meal. Sorry about the quality of the photos!

Complimentary sweet and savory appetizers. I liked the sweet one because it’s reminded me of peanut brittle. It’s basically caramelized wanton with sesame seeds. Yum. The savory one is veggies with octopus or baby squid tentacles in sambal.

Garlic Kailan (not on the menu, but you can order it) and salted fish fried rice. Finally a salted fish fried rice that I think is almost as good as the one they have in Crystal Jade Grand Indonesia (Basement)

We ordered pork prepared in different ways. I think this is the suckling pig with crispy skin!

Below is a sampler platter with Babi Merah or Char Seow and fried pork (if I’m not mistaken).

We had the mango jelly for dessert which was surprisingly good. We avoid ordering anything mango in Indonesia because we Pinoys are used to the super sweet mangoes from Guimaras or Zambales, Philippines.

I just had to take a photo of the open kitchen with their 2 chefs (one buleh or caucasian and one Chinese) and their army of sou chefs! Crazy. Don’t be fooled by the exterior of this restaurant. It’s massive inside.
