JAKARTA EATS: Swine Sunday

February 15, 2012

Our friend Phoebes organized a Pinoy get together for Swine Sunday at the chic Otel Lobby last Sunday. For those of you who don’t know, pork is a prized thing for us Pinoys in Jakarta because it’s hard to find good pork. Even the bacon and ham they have in the supermarket is not the same as the stuff we are used to. So when Phoebes said that for 200++ we would have lechon, side dishes, iced tea and dessert we said “YES Please!”

Arriving at Otel Lobby

Starting with our greens: sauteed cauliflower, apple salad & ceasar’s salad
More sides…My favorite sambal butter corn with parmesan on top!

With a lot of fanfare, Chef Raj presented his masterpiece: 2 lechons! He used young pigs so it was super tender and succulent. There was a lot of picture taking before we dug in. Or rather, before the chef served us. (It was a good idea too or that crispy skin would have been inhaled in a heartbeat!)All pinoys need to enjoy lechon: A ton of rice and some gravy or mang-tomas-style dip! Oh and I love that Otel Lobby gives out mineral water for free – that is uncommon for restos to do here in Jakarta.

My plate:Dessert was abundant too! Each of us got apple pie a la mode + ube or jackfruit ice cream. WHOA!It was fun seeing old friends…Introducing old and new friends…
And meeting new ones…This is me with Chef Raj who was also such a wonderful host to us that night!

Another great thing to try here are the cocktails (according to my in-the-know friends hehe) and the resident mixologist is not bad to look at either haha! (That’s a tip for the ladies!)

The interiors of Otel Lobby as well thought out and quite posh too! ❤

For the food with iced tea and water (exclusive of alcoholic beverages) we each paid IDR 242,000. Not bad for the feast and the most tender lechon I’ve ever had. It’s definitely a treat to be served lechon in a restaurant here in Jakarta where we pinoys are sorta pork-starved haha!

Swine Sundays will be held every last Sunday of the month. Booking ahead is a must.

Chef Raj ABat will also be launching Restaurant Jar Taba in Singapore soon.

[…] When I met Raj Abat at Otel Lobby during one of his Swine Sundays, I was at first intimidated by the tattoos and his signature bandana (which I learned later on is a practical way to prevent the sweat from interfering with this work in scorching hot kitchens). I agree with Ellyna of Jakarta Globe Blog and Culinary Bonanza on this one: […]
