Hotel La Villa Nice Victor Hugo in Cot d’Azur

December 19, 2014

My dream to visit the French Riviera or the Côte d’Azur finally came true this autumn! It was the perfect antidote to my Vitamin D deficiency and the dark gloomy Berlin cold season.

I found Hotel La Villa Nice Victor Hugo on Booking.com and we were really happy with the rate-t0-newness and cleanliness ratio, considering how expensive hotels can be in Nice this was a great deal. We like staying in newly renovated hotels because the chances of it being clean and looking like their online pictures are higher. So far this strategy has worked for us and because La Villa Victor Hugo looked exactly like the pictures online during our stay in December 2014, I didn’t even bother taking pictures.

The location is really fantastic and we walked everywhere… to the Promenade des Anglais, the bus station to visit other towns in Cote d’Azur, fabulous shops and restaurants.

It was a little bit hard to find because google.maps wasn’t accurate in Nice (or even in Paris for that matter) but after looking around with our trolleys, we found it! The facade looks like this:

We checked-in and the different staff we met were professional and helpful. Save for one lady, whom we asked a bathrobe from and she replied “Sorry we don’t provide a bathrobe. Not for that price.” I think she could have answered less curtly. Don’t you agree? But this is very minor and can be improved by a little training from the hotel management.

Our Room

The room was nicer than I expected because it had a lot of storage space in an open closet by the entrance (not pictured) and also had a balcony, where we were able to leave our water and cheese in the evenings so that it remained cold – only because we went in chilly autumn. And as pictured it is mostly whites and light grays – very relaxing colors. We asked for 2 extra pillows and they provided them, but the quality of the pillows weren’t very good and can be improved for sure.

The bathroom was small but clean and very functional with useful surfaces for placing toiletries.  There were no hanging rods for curtains but the hooks behind the door were enough.  On the discounted room rates no bathrobes, but clean face and body towels are provided.

They provided a shower gel/shampoo in the shower…

…plastic cups, soaps, lotions, earbuds and shower caps. So be sure to bring your own conditioner and other toilet essentials.  I was surprised that the bath products provided were German-made because France is so well-known for their toiletries. They probably reserve the fancy French stuff for those paying higher rates.

We didn’t get the breakfast buffet, but we would grab the quick breakfast and have it in our room before we went off exploring. It was something like 7-8 Euros for a coffee, a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and 2 small pastries of your choice. It was the perfect way to start our days.

All in all, I would highly recommend La Villa Victor Hugo hotel if you can get it for around 80 euros per night, which is how much we paid.
