This hotel in Bamberg is one of the most amazing properties I have ever encountered in all my travels. We were only staying one night in Bamberg and I knew I wanted to stay in this hotel because of its unique feature: it is built on top of a river. Yes, you heard me right. It isn’t beside a river or on the riverbank, but it is on top of the river. Imagine sleeping with windows looking over the rushing river, being lulled by sounds of water. Best sleep I’ve ever had! We didn’t even need to use the stand-alone AC because of the cool fresh river breeze.
Located in the southern German district of Franconia, Bamberg is an amazingly preserved early medieval town. Later on in the late 18th century, it became the a center of enlightenment of Southern Germany with many famous philosophers and writers living there. (Sources: UNESCO World Heritage List)
We arrived late at night after a long driver from Rastatt, which is where the Mercedes Benz Factory is located.
Hotel Nepomuk Hotel Room
We got the last room available and it was tiny but comfortable and very well designed. I am always fascinated by well designed hotel rooms that make the most of limited spaces. What we loved about our room was the sound of the river flowing by. It was a cool Fall evening in September (2014) so the fan was perfect with the cool air from the rushing river.
German beds are quite unique, but TD and I have really grown to love the separate single beds, pushed into one big bed, with individual blankets. It’s because I have a tendency to roll around and pull the blanket off of TD and he usually wakes up freezing. With German-style beds, we have individual blankets, and you aren’t disturbed by movements of your partner in bed.
Instead of a TV, they provide iMacs, which is so convenient because not only can you stream stuff to watch, but the computer is a convenient way to search for info and activities in the area.
We had a little healthy midnight snack before we got some much needed rest.
When we woke up, I loved exploring the room’s well-designed little details. These nifty rounded shelving were great for small items, useful and hardly takes up any space.
Clothing racks that hold up glass shelving for extra storage on top, for hats, etc. The hotel spent on luxe details like aluminum hangers that will be used for much longer.
Hooks inside the closet for scarves & their laundry rates. A lockbox to safely store valuables.
As expected the bathroom is small, but well designed so that it has all the conveniences of larger bathrooms, but tissue boxes, wires, etc are kept out of sight by making the features built in. I thought the toilet paper holder was brilliant!
The small desk was hardworking and contained the landline, lamp, computer and sockets we needed for charging.
HOTEL NEPOMUK ENTRANCE
The hotel is right in the center of the picture. When you go by car, they have a convenient valet service that will park your car in a safe location and bring it out when you leave. Since it is a walkable city with very narrow roads, I highly recommend this service if you are bringing a car. Right beside the hotel is Klosterbräu Bamberg (left below), the oldest brewery in Bamberg which was founded in 1533, which is pretty darn old!
In the daylight the entrance is so lovely and minimalist, with beautifully designed wooden furniture, which is found all over the hotel.
Built on the River Regnitz
What I liked best about this hotel is that is built on the river Regnitz, which makes it unique and the location very refreshing, with soothing sounds all day and night. This is why it’s the perfect place to relax. Below you can see the turbines that the hotel is built on.
You can eat in the bar or on street level and have a beautiful view and get a bit of people watching done.
Walk around the river area in one of the oldest quarters in Bamberg with its medieval and Baroque buildings, mixed in with newer ones.
From a nearby bridge, you’ll have a beautiful view of the medieval 4 star hotel and its lovely restaurant Eckerts, which has an amazing al fresco area.
Bamberg is one of my favorite places to go in Germany for some rest and relaxation, because of this beautifully located hotel. So if you have the chance to go to Bamberg, it’s the only place I would recommend you to stay. The rushing water sounds and fresh air will do wonders for your heart. It’s truly worth the splurge.
