BALI BITES: Potato Head Sunset Drinks

October 31, 2011

In the past Ku De Ta has been known to be the go-to bar for sunset cocktails in Seminyak. But that may be changing with Potato Head in town. This 3 restaurant mega complex with a pool (free towel service!) and shop has everything you need for a luxe resort lifestyle!

Designed by acclaimed architect Andra Martin as a modern take on the Coliseum, the towering elliptical façade is crafted in Potato Head’s seminal trademark of mismatched 18th century teak shutters collected from across the Indonesian archipelago. The beachfront bar and 500-square meter emerald lawn leading to an infinity pool is all housed inside a state-of-the-art amphitheater.

Aside from The Rock Bar, this has to be the 2nd most glamorous sunset location I’ve been in. Now if only I could diet and exercise so I can be confident enough to actually use the pool, where all these beautiful people are frolicking.

Walk past the pool and see the beach. I’ve to tell my pinoy friends not to beaches like Boracay here because they get disappointed. You wont find sand as white, powder fine and soft, nor serene clear (swimming pool-like) waters here because the curren & waves are too strong. (That’s why it’s for surfing, not really swimming.) It’s still a great view for sunset cocktails though.

Because we didn’t have reservations, we only had our table for an hour and a half. We had an early dinner with ice cold beer for me and a virgin mojito for TD who was feeling sick from exhaustion that day. Next time I must remember to call for reservation.

Potato Head Restaurant serves comfort food inspired by International home cooked recipes.

I ordered the panfried fish which was delicious and light. TD had the mushroom risotto but he concedes that it was just okay and mine was so much better (thanks to the risotto cooking class I took at The Ritz!). The pork wrapped in bacon was (surprisingly) not as great as expected (usually wrapping something in bacon = guaranteed deliciousness) because there was no flavor in the pork and the sauce was just sweet. The drinks are a highlight compared to the food.

As night fell, the gorgeous bodies in the pool wrapped up and headed for their reserved dining tables. Reservation is a must at Potato Head Beach Club. Though the beds by the pool are first come first serve.

I went to the ladies’ room and discovered the seafood restaurant, Lilin. With the aquariums for the live fresh seafood. We really should try it sometime. I wonder how the prices are.

Lilin offers a tapas selection of South East Asian cuisine and choices of exotic Live seafood as its main highlight.

The pool bar is still open at night so you are welcome to go for a swim. I think that would be time for me so I can hide my chubbiness under the shadows. Hehe.

There are many seating options in Potato Head so take your pick. But be sure to be donned in your most fabulous luxe resort wear! I never got to see the last resto – maybe it’s the one on the higher floor?

Tapping Shoes, a unique presentation of a French fine dining experience serving haute cuisine prepared through a Japanese chef interpretation.

I never got to check out Eleven Boutique, because the Ambassador was with us so no dilly dallying (shopping) for me! Eleven is co-owned by blogger Lady Macaron.

Isn’t this awesome! I would go there for those beautiful antique teak shutters alone…but truly the concept is so chic, the sunset and ambiance so enthralling (especially with that über fashionable music in the background) that the average food was the farthest thing on my mind. Besides the entire time I was willing my tummy to go away! (If only it were mind over matter!) I wish we had something like this! To all you party-philes, sunset lovers and beach babes… this is a definite must see (and be seen) in Bali!

“easily triple the size (of Ku De Ta), with three restaurants, a large pool right by the ocean, and a sophisticated design atmosphere with vintage furniture and hundreds of faded pastel-colored shutters layered one on top of each other as decoration.”

[…] POTATO HEAD BEACH CLUB – Potato Head in Pacific Place Mall is one of our regular places to eat/drink. They’ve finally launched in Bali late 2010 with a mega bar/complex with several floors and a pool. You can bring your swim gear here because there’s a pool and there’s free towel service. Super chic and apparently totally kicking Ku De Ta‘s arse. According to @GourmetTravel, food is still better in Ku De Ta but this place is great for drinks. With 3 restaurants, a pool and a shop – I have to agree! […]
