TRAVEL DIARIES: A Reunion at Savvas Restaurant Athens

August 6, 2014

When we visited Athens in May of 2014, TD’s (The Diplomat) best friend from university, Alexi, flew in just to see him and he invited us to have a meal in Savvas. In my mind, this was my first experience of Greek hospitality. Alexi ordered a lot of food. It looked like more food than 5 people could eat, yet I don’t remember that we left a lot, because all the dishes were so fresh and delicious, the perfect combination of yogurt and vegetables with the richness of the meat and cheese. I do not know the names of the dishes, because Alexi ordered them for us, but surely if you show them to the waitstaff, if you eat here, then they can tell you the names.

The meal was unforgettable because it was the first time TD saw his friend since University Days, but also because of the amazing flavors that we had that night.

When the appetizers came, we thought it was the entire meal already.

And then the entrees came and our eyes popped, because we were so surprised! More food?! It doesn’t feel so heavy with the veggies and the yogurt a good balance to the richness of the meats.

If you visit Athens, I definitely would recommend Savvas. I initially thought the name of the restaurant was Sabbas, but that’s just how they right it in greek. Do not be turned off by it’s touristy appearance, the food is the reason it’s an institution in Athens.

We did not get to sit on the roof deck with a view, but if you make reservations, I am sure you can get a table and it would be stunning.
