Aside from the iconic Ampelmann pedestrian crossing lights here is another iconic Berlin image: huge brightly colored pipes that crisscross the city. Most commonly in pink. I’ve always wanted to know what they are for?

ACCORDING TO THIS BBC ARTICLE they are pipes that pump out the water from construction sites to keep dig sites dry. Sometimes the pipes are in a different color too like these green ones below.

If you watch the BBC video it’s funny the way they chose pink as the main color for the pipes!
